The Lab

“What do ideas look like when they are taking physical shape? Why do we like to watch people making things?” -Lynda Barry, Syllabus

This mindful practice (inspired by the philosophy of illustrators Lynda Barry and Yumi Sakugawa) is a series of guided drawing prompts that will help unlock hidden avenues for creativity in theatre artists and provide new tools to out of creative ruts and writer’s block. All levels of drawing are welcome and celebrated. You are encouraged to draw with whatever makes you happiest: paints, markers, pens, crayons, or a classic pencil and paper!

About your Lab Instructor

Sophie May Healey

Sophie May Healey (she/they) is a performer, writer, and visual artist working in amiskwaciwâskahikan, also known as Edmonton. She holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Alberta. In her work, she explores ideas of gender, neurodivergence, and identity. Their original neo-bouffon clown and character works, including Hysteria Winthrop and Sharon the Wellness Hag, have been featured in cabarets and festivals such as Nextfest and SkirtsAFire. Recent credits include the Bakkhai in Bakkhai (Bleviss Laboratory Theatre) Mina Harker in Dracula, the Owl in The Birds, the Young Woman in Don Juan Comes Back From the War (Studio Theatre) Claire Holmes in The Secret Garden (Opera NUOVA) and Maisie Merryweather in The Boy Friend (University of Alberta).
