Description: Third Rail Projects Immersive Theater Intensive

Led by Jennine Willett, Co-Artistic Director of Third Rail Projects, the workshop offers a comprehensive exploration of methods for working in immersive theater formats, where the audience and the performers are not separated by a fourth wall and the multi-sensory experience of the audience is a central focus.  Over the course of two days, participants will explore the skills that come into play when performers and audience share space, including developing awareness and adapting to a changing audience landscape, ways of cueing and connecting with audiences, and responding to audience choices through intuitive decision-making. The workshop will culminate in a collaborative exercise where participants will work together to craft immersive experiences for each other, providing an opportunity to employ all of the skills that are presented over the two days.

Bio:

Jennine Willett is a director, choreographer, and educator and Co-Artistic Director of Third Rail Projects, the Brooklyn-based company known for their widely acclaimed site-specific, immersive, and experiential performances. She is co-creator of the large scale immersive productions of Brooklyn’s Then She Fell (2012) and The Grand Paradise (2016), Chicago’s Learning Curve (2016), and Lincoln Center Theater’s Ghost Light (2017). Named one of the “Top Ten Shows of 2012” by the New York Times, Then She Fell continues to run for its sixth year. Created in collaboration with Albany Park Theater Project and performed by 33 of its youth performers, Learning Curve was named one of the “Top Ten Shows of 2016” by the Chicago Tribune, Time-Out, and the Chicago Sun-Times, who called it “an altogether wondrous, one-of-a-kind, ‘immersive’ masterwork.”

At the helm of Third Rail’s education initiatives, Jennine has offered courses for numerous academic instuitions and arts organizations. Her courses attract artists of all ages and disciplines and she creates a learning environment that encourages experimentation and collaboration, both of which are an integral part of her work. She has been honored with two BESSIE awards and a Chita Rivera Award, and was named as one of the 100 most influential people in Brooklyn culture by Brooklyn Magazine.
