Created partially in 2005 in response to the demise of Grant MacEwan’s Dance Program, Expanse is an interdisciplinary festival that was founded by Amber Borotsik and Murray Utas.
Expanse was originally presented at the Living Room Playhouse on a shoestring budget. With support from the Edmonton Arts Council, the University Bookstore, The Edmonton Real Estate Board, and The Edmonton Community Foundation, Expanse grew each subsequent year, graduating to larger and larger venues (Catalyst Theatre, The Roxy, The ATB Financial Arts Barns).
Currently situated as part of the Arts At The Barns Presentation Series and having completed its first decade, we are now ready to capitalize on the partnerships and the reputation we have developed, with a mind to audience development, augmenting our programming, and community outreach.
We consider the annual presentation of movement-based work by local artists, choreographers from across Canada, and internationally to be at the core of Expanse’s goals.
