By Jeremy Baumung. 2007, 2008
The majority of the characters in Jeremy’s one-man show are based on people he met while working at the George Spady Centre: a 24 hour drop-in ‘harm reduction’ and detox centre in Edmonton. They are the stories of the marginalized.
Homeless is a funny, searing, moving journey of the lives of those who society tries to forget, but it is also a story of Jeremy’s own spiritual journey from fundamentalist Christianity to a broader and more generous form of spirituality, and the true meaning of charity.
Despite numerous opportunities to witness the show, audience demand remained high. Azimuth Theatre was interested in this project for many reasons. It satisfied our artistic raison-d’etre in that it was: an original performance based creation, the work of a young local emerging artist, it addressed an audience not generally served by mainstream theatre, it examined an aspect of our society with a critical gaze, it was bold and unflinching in its honesty.
