A Collective by iHuman Youth Society, 2005
Presented at The TransAlta Arts Barns, and developed as a collective creation with street involved youth, “The Bridge” was the product of a three-month development project to create “a new hip-hop musical”.
The facilitators spent two months cultivating the voice of the collective comprised of iHumanites most of whom shared the experience of recovering from addiction. The kernel of the narrative focused on the experience of seeking help and the barriers associated with receiving help. The central image of a bridge was decided upon with the accompanying figure of a bridge keeper whose task was to deny access to the promise of a better life on the other side.
The play was presented as a fully rehearsed production for two weeks at the TransAlta Arts Barns in conjunction with an iHuman visual arts exhibition with a dance crew performing at intermission.
