in and out of dark

As part of Reframe Perspective: Stories In Motion

We tell scary stories for pleasure, but there is a line we can cross where it is no longer fun. It is just fear. In and out of dark is a playful exploration of darkness and our relationship with fear. We walk this blurry line examining imagery from children’s stories and the sensations we experience when afraid.

What Is the Inspiration For Your Piece?

The seed for this piece was interactions with my two young children. Both of them love to hear scary stories and they enjoy the feeling of being afraid. But, there is a line that I often cross when it is no longer fun for them and they are genuinely afraid. I am curious about this process and the desire to continue sharing scary stories and games even after real fear is experienced.

What Point In Process Is Your Piece At? (What stage of growth is your piece at, sapling, sprout, tree, shrub, whatever you feel)

in and out of dark is a baby tree. It sprouted late last summer in a process involving an informal showing and then continued to grow over a couple of showings in process this fall/winter. This will be the premiere of the full work. I imagine this as just a beginning and that the work will continue to evolve and have a life afterwards.
