Writing from the Body with Charlie Peters

Clown and Physical Comedy Series in collaboration with Small Matters Productions and The Physical Comedy Lab
This workshop will offer a variety of techniques for creating text “from the body.” Drawing from Pochinko clowning, the methodology of the UK’s Frantic Assembly, and other movement-based practices, the aim will be to offer participants a variety of skills and techniques which they can adapt for their own purposes, goals, and practices. We will move, we will imagine, we will write – and we will have fun!
Participants should come ready to move and write – whatever those things mean to you. The level of physical engagement required is completely adaptable to each participant. Participants are invited to consider a “theme” they might be interested in exploring in this creative practice, and to bring an object (ideally smaller than a breadbox) that might be related to the theme (the relation need not be literal or make sense to anyone but you).
Charlie Peters is a theatre and opera director, actor, lighting designer, playwright, dramaturge, poet, and clown. He holds a BFA in Acting from the University of Saskatchewan, continued his training at the Manitoulin Conservatory for Creation and Performance, and has begun work towards an MFA in Theatre Practice at the University of Alberta. He is the recipient of Saskatoon and Area Theatre Awards for Outstanding Emerging Artist (2013) and Outstanding Lighting Design (Two Corpses Go Dancing, 2015) and was nominated for Outstanding Direction (Diana Son’s Stop Kiss, 2014) and Outstanding Original Script (Many Fires, 2019). His artistic work has been seen on stages (and in parks, fields, school gyms, living rooms, and pools) across Western Canada. Charlie is Artistic Associate with Sum Theatre, Founding Director of Embrace Theatre, serves as Secretary on the board of directors of the Saskatchewan Association of Theatre Professionals, and also works as a theatre educator, using drama skills to build community, inter and intra-personal awareness, and self-confidence through playful, imaginative learning. . www.charliepeters.ca
